The Katingan Mentaya Project (the Project) is a forest protection and restoration initiative in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. It was established to prevent the conversion of the forest and the draining of its underlying peat soil to industrial acacia plantations. It manages 157,875 hectares (of which the project carbon accounting area is 149,800ha) of peat swamp forest under a 60-year permit issued by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment in 2013 and 2016. The project demonstrates how large-scale conservation can be sustained with private-sector financing through the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM).
